Lebron Pushes To Make Arenas ‘Mega Polling Sites’ To Combat Racism

Published

on

LeBron James has taken multiple steps in 2020 to expand his influence far beyond the sports arena, garnering $100 million in seed money for his new media empire “designed to move the culture” and increasingly weighing in on the national socio-political scene, with the NBA following his lead in its newly announced social justice initiatives. Now his voting rights group is pushing for the political world to literally merge with the sports world, at least for a day, in an effort to combat “racist voter suppression.”

James’s “More Than A Vote” organization — a group of African-American athletes and artists working together in “combating systemic, racist voter suppression” — is pushing for sports arenas to be used as in-person balloting venues this year as part of its larger effort to maximize black voter turnout.

The group, formed this spring as the COVID-19 pandemic brought sports to a standstill, discussed the initiative with The Associated Press on Wednesday “after the Detroit Pistons became the second NBA franchise to announce plans to use its arena for voting later this year.”

“James and his voting rights group, formed this spring with other black athletes and entertainers, are joining with other professional basketball leaders and Michigan’s top elections official to push for mega voting sites to accommodate in-person balloting amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” AP reported.

“The idea, which comes after Kentucky used large facilities in its June 23 primary, is to use large spaces that allow for in-person voting while still enforcing social distancing guidelines,” AP explained. “It also underscores the attention on the mechanics of voting amid the pandemic, with the intensity already reflected in both President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden warning that state and local officials have the power to ‘corrupt’ the election.”

Kentucky modeled the initiative in a June 23 primary, turning to larger venues better able to accommodate social distancing mandates. As AP noted, while it was deemed a success, some Democrats in the state initially criticized the idea, warning that plans to limit voting to the bigger arenas might “harm minority voters.” However, then the primary day came, “voting proceeded without the melee that some advocates had forecast.”

The narrative has now shifted. Rather than arenas being a voting “suppression” method, they are being endorsed by Democrats as a way to fight against suppression. “One of our greatest challenges in protecting voters’ access to democracy this November is identifying accessible locations where citizens can safely vote in person,” said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, AP reports.

James has become arguably the most influential sports figure in America, and he has not been idle while his league went on a months-long lockdown, taking major steps in “moving the culture” in March by launching his ambitious new “media empire,” SpringHill Co. after obtaining a $100 million investment.

The league that James has long dominated, meanwhile, is preparing to get back into action — and will do so by officially declaring its endorsement of Black Lives Matter, painting the name of the organization on both sides of the courts at the Walt Disney World arenas in which its season will resume in late July, and allowing players to put social justice-themed messages on their jerseys.

CNN Editor Suggests Joe Biden Could ‘Step Aside’ For Kamala Harris

Published

on

Joe Biden would be 78 years old when sworn in on Jan. 20, 2021, should he win the presidential election.

President Donald Trump was 70 when he took office, the oldest in history after President Ronald Reagan, who was 69.

Biden’s age was clearly a factor in his choice of a running mate, which is, at least in part, why he picked Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who is 55. Biden has also said he wanted a running mate who would “be ready to be president on day one.” And there have been reports that he has signaled to aides “that he would serve only a single term.”

Then there was Biden’s oddly worded e-mail to supporters on Tuesday: “I’ve decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Donald Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021.”

Wait, she’s leading the nation starting January 2021?

So perhaps it’s not surprising that even a CNN editor thinks Biden might not go the distance — and may even “step aside.”

“What Biden did is make the pick that maximized his chances of continuing to make the race a straight referendum on Trump while also selecting someone, in Harris, whose resume suggests will be ready to step in if and when Biden decides to step aside,” wrote editor-at-large Chris Cillizza, who pens a daily piece called “The Point.”

“This is the VP choice of a confident candidate, and campaign, who believe they are winning. And who believe that, as long they execute the basics of the campaign between now and November 3, Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president on January 20, 2021,” Cillizza wrote (never mind that when Sen. John McCain picked a woman as his running mate in 2008 — a sitting governor, no less — the mainstream media portrayed the move as a last-ditch Hail Mary by a losing candidate).

Cillizza’s thought that perhaps Biden will “step aside” is not that unusual — many Americans think so, too.

“The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 59% of Likely U.S. Voters believe it’s likely Biden’s running mate will be president before the end of Biden’s four-year term if he wins this fall, with 39% who say it’s Very Likely,” the pollster wrote on Monday. “Thirty-five percent (35%) consider it unlikely that Biden’s vice presidential choice will be president before his four-year term ends, but that includes only 14% who think it’s Not At All Likely.”

“Even 49% of Democrats think it’s likely Biden’s vice president will become president in the next four years, although that compares to 73% of Republicans and 57% of voters not affiliated with either major party,” the pollster wrote.

The younger the voter, the more convinced they are that Biden is unlikely to finish a four-year term if elected president. But most voters in nearly every demographic category think it’s likely his running mate will become president in the next four years.

QAnon-Tied Candidate Vows To ‘Kick That Bi—’ Pelosi Out Of Congress After Primary Win

Published

House candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a “bitch” during her acceptance speech after winning a Republican primary election in Georgia.

Greene told her supporters on Tuesday that she was going to get Pelosi removed from Congress after winning her runoff election against John Cowan to become the GOP nominee for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District.

“She’s a hypocrite. She’s anti-American. And we’re going to kick that bitch out of Congress,” she said.

Greene also had harsh words for some of the Republican leaders in Congress. Several top Republicans had disavowed her candidacy because of videos she had posted using racist language and for her ties to the conspiracy theories touted by QAnon. GOP leaders such as Whip Steve Scalise had revoked their endorsements after the videos of Greene surfaced.

“The GOP establishment, the media, & the radical left, spent months & millions of dollars attacking me,” Greene tweeted after her win. “Tonight the people of Georgia stood up & said that we will not be intimidated or believe those lies.”

Greene may have lost the support of many House Republicans, but President Trump commended her for her win on Wednesday morning, calling her a “future Republican star.”

“Congratulations to future Republican Star Marjorie Taylor Greene on a big Congressional primary win in Georgia against a very tough and smart opponent. Marjorie is strong on everything and never gives up — a real WINNER!” he tweeted.

Greene thanked Trump for his endorsement, writing, “Thank you @realdonaldtrump. I love America, it’s the greatest country in the world! You inspired me to run and fight to Save America and Stop Socialism!! No one will fight harder than me!!”

Thousands Of Americans Renounce Citizenship, Citing Trump, Coronavirus As Reasons

Published

on

Nearly six thousand Americans renounced their citizenship in the first six months of 2020, a massive increase over the previous six months.

The numbers were reported by Bambridge Accountants New York, a firm which specializes in taxes for United Kingdom expatriates and U.S. citizens, which reviewed a government list of Americans who have renounced their citizenship. An IRS rule requires the government to publish these names every three months.

In the first six months of 2020, a whopping 5,816 Americans renounced their citizenship, more than twice the number who renounced in all of 2019. The first six months also showed a massive increase over the previous six months – a 1,210% increase from the 444 people who renounced during that time.

The second quarter of 2020 saw nearly the same number of Americans renounce their citizenship as the first quarter, when 2,909 renounced, creating a new record. Slightly fewer (2,907) renounced in the second quarter of 2020. Just 2,072 Americans abandoned their citizenship in all four quarters of 2019.

Bambridge reported that the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the current political climate and “onerous tax reporting” were the apparent reasons for the increase in Americans renouncing their citizenship. In their press release, Bambridge did not mention President Donald Trump as a specific reason people decided to renounce their citizenship, but when asked by CNN, Alistair Bambridge, a partner at the accounting firm, told the outlet: “What we’ve seen is people are over everything happening with President Donald Trump, how the coronavirus pandemic is being handled, and the political policies in the US at the moment.”

Bambridge explained in the press release that “the current pandemic has allowed individuals the time to review their ties to the U.S. and decide that the current political climate and annual US tax reporting is just too much to bear.”

“For U.S. citizens living abroad, they are still required to file U.S. tax returns each year, potentially pay U.S. tax and report all their foreign bank accounts, investments and pensions held outside the U.S. For many Americans this intrusion is too complicated, and they make the serious step of renouncing their citizenship as they do not plan to return to live in the U.S.,” Bambridge continued. “There has been a silver lining for U.S. expats that they have been able to claim the stimulus check of $1,200, and $500 for each child. For those individuals and families, the proposed second stimulus check will be very welcome once the HEALS Act is approved.”

Bambridge also reported that there are estimated to be 9 million U.S. expatriates and that the trend had been rapidly declining since 2017 – the year Trump became president. This year, however, changed everything, and the levels seen in the first six months of 2020 are the highest on record.

Americans who wish to renounce their citizenship must pay the government $2,350. Americans who live overseas must pay in person at the U.S. Embassy in the country in which they live.
