House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid an unannounced trip to Ukraine on Sunday. She met with President Volodymyr Zelensky at Kyiv and gave the Ukrainians an open-ended U.S. promise to fight the Russians.
Pelosi said to him, “Your fight’s a fight for all. So our commitment is that we will be there for your fight until it is over.”
Zelensky was thrilled. Zelensky stated that this was a clear indication of America’s leadership in supporting Ukraine during the war against aggression by the Russian Federation.
Yahoo News: “We believe we are visiting to express our gratitude for your struggle for freedom”. “Our commitment is to you until the fight’s over,” Pelosi stated to Zelensky during their meeting in Kyiv in a video released in part by the Ukrainian leader.
The entire congressional delegation consisted of a number of House leaders, including Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), chair of House Intelligence Committee; Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), chair of House Foreign Affairs Committee; Jason; D-Colo.; Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), Jim McGovern, D.Mass., and Bill Keating (D-Mass.
Zelensky stated to the delegation that they were all welcome after their first meeting.
Pelosi and the Democrats that accompanied her didn’t announce their visit before they arrived, but they likely had some protection until they arrived.
Russia recently escalated its warnings about the U.S. regarding providing advanced weaponry for the Ukrainians. This suggests that the military assistance could have “unpredictable results” and that the shipments could be made into targets.
Pelosi stated at the news conference, “Let me speak for myself: Don’t be bullied by Bullies.” “If they make threats, you can’t back down.”
Zelensky thanked the U.S. via Twitter for helping to protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity. The U.S. is providing strong support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Zelensky added that “we’ll win, we’ll win together.”
These Russian threats will eventually be more than idle thoughts. What then? What happens if Russia targets arms shipments to Ukraine via NATO?
Moscow declared on Sunday that it had destroyed U.S. weapons on an Odessa runway.
Reuters: Russia’s defense ministry stated that it struck at the weapons provided to Ukraine by the United States of Europe and destroyed a runway at the military airfield close to Odesa, Ukraine.
After Russia had accused Ukraine of destroying a runway at Odesa’s main airport, the ministry claimed it used Onyx missiles with high precision to strike the airfield.
Maksym Marchenko, the Odesa regional governor, stated that Russia had launched a Bastion missile from Crimea.
Biden will now need to take steps to protect the shipments. Biden must match Putin’s escalation and vice versa. It is a never-ending process. Pelosi has also spoken of a Forever War. Perhaps someone should begin to talk about a way out before we all get trapped.
