Trump Attacks Classic RINO Colin Powell One Day After His Death

Former President Donald Trump criticized the late Colin Powell on Tuesday for his role in launching the Iraq War and being a “classic RINO.”

“Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated in death so beautifully by the Fake News Media,” Trump wrote in a statement the day after Powell, the first black secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died due to complications from COVID-19. “Hope that happens to me someday. He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!”

Powell’s family announced his death Monday morning. The 84-year-old had been battling a rare blood cancer in addition to the coronavirus and died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, despite being fully vaccinated.

President Joe Biden, whom Powell endorsed at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, said his “good friend” always “embodied the highest ideals of both warrior and diplomat” and “was committed to our nation’s strength and security above all.”

“Having fought in wars, he understood better than anyone that military might alone was not enough to maintain our peace and prosperity. From his front-seat view of history, advising presidents and shaping our nation’s policies, Colin led with his personal commitment to the democratic values that make our country strong,” Biden added in a statement. “Time and again, he put country before self, before party, before all else — in uniform and out — and it earned him the universal respect of the American people. Having repeatedly broken racial barriers, blazing a trail for others to follow in Federal Government service, Colin was committed throughout his life to investing in the next generation of leadership.”

The president praised Powell as a “trusted confidant in good and hard times.”

“He could drive his Corvette Stingray like nobody’s business — something I learned firsthand on the race track when I was Vice President,” Biden continued. “I am forever grateful for his support of my candidacy for president and for our shared battle for the soul of the nation. I will miss being able to call on his wisdom in the future.”

“Colin Powell was a good man,” he closed. “He will be remembered as one of our great Americans.”

Powell’s career and legacy, which included a Purple Heart in the Vietnam War and a stint as former President Ronald Reagan’s national security adviser, was tarnished by his role in helping the Bush administration invade Iraq. His 2003 speech before the United Nations Security Council incorrectly claimed that Saddam Hussein had stockpiled weapons of mass destruction throughout Iraq. He would later call it a “blot” on his record.
